Watching Time

This story came from a friend of mine that hosts a process painting group. Isn't it a joy to realize how much time we sometimes really have? Manage your time well, and take care of your spirit, your soul, your body and your well-being. After all, that is what we are here for!

A funny thing happened to me that made me realize something this week!!!   My watch stopped working sometime last week at 9:00.     I realize how rarely I look at my watch because I really didn't think about it again until Sunday night, when I was reading a book.   Troy was out of town and I was kind of waiting up for him. I was reading a great book; it seemed to be getting late.   I looked at my watch .   It was 9:00,   I thought great, I still have about an hour to read.   Read and read and looked at my watch. It was 9:00!!   Wow, must be a great book,   seems like a good while since I checked, but it was just a few minutes ago, Wow, am I a good speed reader!!! Or is this book just so great?!!!    Finally, about 11:00, I realized my watch stopped last week!!!! Oh, well, no matter what time it was, I enjoyed my reading!!

Monday morning, I get up and do yoga, reading, play with the dog and cat, chat with Troy, etc. Seems like time is going by!!     I look at my watch.   It's 9:00!!!   Oh my gosh, I have to shower and get to office by 9:30, (with a 20 minute drive!!!) Rush, rush rush!!!! I get to the office at 8:30, my staff thinks something wrong, with me arriving so early!!!

Oh well, Time is so relative!!!   How much do we live by our watch? How much do we plan ahead.     Have you ever totally lost track of time???      That seems to happen often in the art room ,   when we totally lose ourselves in the midst of the color, shape and images that reveal themselves on our blank canvas.

Also known as PFB, Pseudofolliculitis barbae refers to chronically irritated skin caused by shaving. More common in African American men or anyone with naturally curly hair, PFB can be found anywhere on the body where shaving or plucking has occurred. It can be quite uncomfortable, especially where hairs become ingrown. Ingrown hairs should be gently removed with tweezers; if they are particularly deep or have never exited the follicle, a dermatologist should perform the procedure. PFB typically responds well to exfoliation and for prevention, laser hair removal.

Interesting Exercise on Morals and Our Choices

We all make choices and they are not always as simple as they seem. We are often too polarized in our thinking or looking for simple solutions to complex questions. What is simple from my perspective is maintaining your principles, the most important of them is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". I value fairness and strive in everything I do to be fair to all parties and in business this means to myself as well. I won't stay in business very long if I only, to use the airline analogy, keep putting the oxygen mask on everyone else. We have to find common ground and do what is best for everyone involved to the best of our ability.

Today I received a fun email from Carol Davis of the Interior Homestore http://www.interiorhomestore.com/ here in Sherman, Texas. This is my edited version of the story:

MORALS....

You are driving down the road in your car on a wild, stormy night, when you pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus:

1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.

2. An old friend who once saved your life.

3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.

Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car? Think before you continue reading. This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of a job application. You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first. Or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect mate again.

YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS....................

The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer. He simply answered: 'I would give the car keys to my old friend and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the partner of my dreams.' Sometimes, we gain more if we are able to give up our stubborn thought limitations. Never forget to 'Think Outside of the Box.'

Types of Massage Offered at Bella Fontana Spa

The massage therapy and body work techniques that will be used by the employees of Bella Fontana Spa are for the purpose of stress reduction, relief from muscular tension or spasm, expressing lymph fluid from tissue, increasing circulation to soft tissue, pain management, improving the texture and tone of the skin and relaxation. In the massage we will use kneading and stroking motions, massage tools, stones, vibratory machines or stretching techniques applied to the musuloskeletal system, skin and soft tissues of the body to produce these results.

Draping is required at Bella Fontana Spa, and only the part of the body being worked in a massage will be exposed. For hydrotherapy services, clients may choose to bring a bathing suit or take advantage of disposable lower undergarments or draping as needed for the type of service used. Areas to be treated may include some or all of the following: scalp, face, neck and/or decollete, arms, legs, upper and lower back in all massage therapy treatments. Areas to be treated in therapeutic, triggerpoint, myfascial, deep tissue and other massage therapy modalities may include hip joints, glutes and abdominals as required for effective treatment. Massage therapy is a health enhancing preventative treatment.

Swedish Massage - this is the relaxing version of a massage. Typically long stroking movements using the forearm, palm, thumbs and elbows. Based on your needs, some spot deep pressure, trigger point or other modalities may be applied. The main purpose is to increase oxygen flow and release toxins such as lactic acid that accumulate in the muscle tissue. One hour is $60.00

Aromatherapy Massage - a variant of Swedish Massage that includes the use of essential oils infused into the lubricant used for the massage. Typically long strokingmovements using the forearm, palm, thumbs and elbows. Very relaxing indeed. One hour is $70.00.

Reflexology Technique Massage - Reflexology correlates certain pressure points and meridians on the feet to specific body areas. Applying pressure to these points with specific finger, thumb and hand techniques without oil or lotion is believed to effect change to the body. This treatment can also be added onto a body massage. Single Session is 30 Minutes at $45.00

Trigger Point Massage - Trigger points are areas of tenderness in muscles. There are active and latent triggerpoints with active causing muscular pain and referring pain to other areas when pressure is applied; and latent only exhibit pain when pressed. Triggerpoints may be associated with fibromyalgia and are commonly referred to as 'knots'. The purpose of trigger point therapy is to eliminate pain and to re-educate the muscles into pain-free habits. After several treatments, the swelling and stiffness of neuromuscular pain is reduced, range of motion is increased, tension is relieved, and circulation, flexibility and coordination are improved. One hour is $70.00.

Sports Massage - Prepares the athlete for peak performance, increases circulation, oxygenates and releases/disperses lactic acid, reduces fatigue and tension, relieves swelling, promotes flexibility and prevent injuries. Used before and during to warm up and invigorate, and after athletic events to calm and relax. Addresses large muscle groups, joints and utilizes stretching, percussion and other modalities to improve performance. One hour is $75.00.

Lymphatic Massage - A massage that facilitates the expression of accumulated lymph fluid from tissue by stimulating the nearby lymph channels. Useful for visible edema from lymph node removal, post surgical swelling, sluggish immune systems and other causes. One hour is $85.00.

Myofascial Release Massage - A gentle massage with amixture of light stretching and massage work. Massage strokes releasetension from the fibrous bands of the muscles, bones, nerves andjoints, by unblocking any scar tissue or adhesions due to injury that is often combined with light to moderate traction and twistingstrokes to apply the appropriate tension on the soft tissue toachieve a full reflex range of the muscle. This slow and subtletechnique can be used to unblock fascia and muscle throughout the bodyrestoring total physical harmony. One hour is $75.00.

Deep Tissue Massage - Intense pressure to restore length and flexibility to the fascia, relieve chronic tension, break up restrictive scar tissue and improve posture, range of motion and the harmony of the body. Lotions and creams may not be used in this massage. Involves deep intense strokes. Adhesions and trigger points are addressed to relieve tenderness. Client may be sore for up to two days after this massage. One hour is $85.00.

Therapeutic Massage - One of our most popular treatments. A multi-modality massage including one or more of the techniques described above intended to introduce clients to new modalities or to add specific modalities to a Swedish Massage. One hour is $75.00.

Hot Stone Massage - A relaxing massage using warm basalt river stones as a tool to warm the area before and during massage, increase pressure and to promote relaxation. One Hour is $80.00

Lift and Tone Facial Massage - A lifting massage to strengthen and tone facial muscles. It's relaxing and rejuvenating. Addresses the musculature that supports the face. While we use skin care treatment creams, this is not a facial. It's more like a sports massage for the face to stretch, strengthen and lift. 45 Minute Session is $50.00

Are Pedicures Really Safe? We put our hands in there too!

There are risks inherent in every activity, and for generally healthy clients, the risks associated with a pedicure are very small indeed. By generally healthy, I am including anyone who's immune system is functioning normally and your Doctor is the best person to help you assess the status of your health.
At Bella Fontana Spa, we help protect your health by using a special foot soak that is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It contains urea, salicylic acid and aloe vera, among other ingredients that cleanse and help soften calluses. According to the manufacturer, some of the retail products, especially the Anti-Fungal Formula 7, contains 1% Clotrimazole. an anti-fungal agent that relieves itching, scaling, cracking, burning, redness and irritation associated with fungus, including ringworm and athlete's foot and protects the feet from picking it up in the first place. The moisturizing and anti-fungal formulas use a dermal integration technology, DIT, that allows the product to penetrate easier and faster into the skin. The mousse mimics the skins own composition closely and contains CoEnzyme Q10 and urea making it the most effective moisturizer available. Read more about Footlogix.
Recently, SpaBoom put an entry on their blog about Pedicures, and I commented:

Think about the fungal and bacterial load at the gym, department store carpet in the shoe department, and the parasites in the lake or your own front yard. Our first line of defense, as wonderful as many of the smell and feel good products out there, is a specialty anti-bacterial and anti-fungal foot soak. We also use EPA rated anti-bacterial, anti-tuberculoidal and anti-fungal sanitizer in our pipeless pedicure stations. We have an autoclave, disposable tools and more all to keep our clients safe. Unless a client has a compromised immune system, our pedicures are as safe as any other activity. Sure, there are risks like a nick or cut for both the client and the technician. Take care of the customer and reassure them you are using the best products to protect them. Clients, please ask about the sanitation protocols and take good care of your feet everywhere you go!

It is important to me that you feel safe and know that I am doing everything I can to take care of your health and well being. In my judgment, pedicures are safe in an environment that is conscientious about cleaning their equipment and implements, or uses disposables, and uses products that facilitate protecting and caring for your skin. There are risks, but the risks under these conditions are typically a nick or cut that can become infected without care, abrasions or infection or other injury that is no greater than what you might expect at your local gym, on the beach, in your backyard or medical office. Remember, we put our hands on your feet and in those bowls too!

Blading the Skin - Derma Planing Blading or Leveling for Superior Hair Removal and Exfoliation

How does the Technician perform this treatment?

Our certified technician will use a #10 blade, a type of scalpel. The blade is held against the skin at a 45 degree angle and stroked along the skin just like shaving. However, the practitioner is doing the stroking while holding the area of skin taut. At Bella Fontana Spa, your skin will be cleansed and prepared in advance and a treatment cream will follow so your skin will be smooth and moisturized.

Is this Derma Planing Treatment Safe?

This treatment is performed by a professionally trained technician with extensive skin type knowledge. It is very safe and there is no more risk to the skin than when a barber shaves a face the old fashioned way. However, we will prepare the skin in advance and will not be using shaving cream.

Doesn't Hair grow back thicker and/or darker when shaved?

This is a common myth. What actually happens with terminal hair (that that grows under and on the arms, legs, beards, etc.) is that when cut it has a blunt edge. The blunt edge starts just at the skin level and feels sharp and can be seen through the skin if there is enough contrast between the skin color and hair color. At Bella Fontana Spa, we recommend laser hair reduction or waxing for this type of hair. Vellous hair, or the fine blonde hairs often found on the face will not be physiologically affected by cutting. It will remain soft because the structure of the hair, and its root is undamaged and unaltered. Terminal hair is coarse, and vellous hair is soft and each will retain the original structure after cutting.

Why do dark, or Terminal Hairs, suddenly appear?

Typically the sudden change in the thickness, texture of hair or the appearance of dark and/or coarse hair appearing where it has never been before is the result of hormonal changes, puberty, menopause or chemotherapy, thyroid disease or other hormonal changes. Consult your physician if you are concerned about the changes in your hair.

What about Waxing?

We are waxing or depilatory experts at Bella Fontana Spa. Waxing makes the hair appear thinner for one of two reasons. First, waxing pulls the hair from its roots effectively restarting the dormancy and growth cycle. The new hair will grow in with the small pointed tip making it appear thinner and feel softer. But the structure of the hair remains the same, and if grown long enough or cut will conform to the description above about terminal vs. vellous hair. Secondly, if you interrupt the hair growth cycle enough, there is a chance that the hair regrowth cycle will slow, or the root becomes damaged and the hair will not grow back, or finally, aging, hypothyroidism or some other factor will affect the growth cycle.

Will I bleed?

Probably not, but I must say this is one of the risks of using an open blade on the skin. This can happen with waxing or laser hair removal as well. Or, if you are on blood thinners, or have used certain medications, your propensity to bleed will be increased. We do not recommend waxing, for example, for those actively using Accutane, Retinols or other treatments that thin the skin and increase the occurrence of peeling or bleeding. The incidence of an accidental cut is slim, but about the same as shaving even with safety blades. We have all nicked our knees and ankles, chin or other places with shaving.

What areas can be treated?

Blading the skin is performed on the face only at Bella Fontana Spa. We recommend body waxing for arms, legs, underarms for temporary hair removal, and laser hair reduction for permanent hair removal.

Can I combine a chemical peel?

We recommend combining the derma planing procedure with our gel peel, a light salicylic or glycolic acid peel. This peel requires no preparation and you can expect good results and a peel over a three or four day period.

Waxing and How to Treat your Skin In Between

Waxing is the most popular hair removal service, although, at Bella Fontana Spa, laser hair reduction is an option. Information on Laser Hair reduction can be found in this blog and on our Medical Spa page at www.bellafontanaspa.com.

We use a variety of hard and warm waxes to remove hair from the most public to the most sensitive of areas. The hair needs to be about 1/4 of an inch in length for the wax to effectively remove the hair. We follow up with post-depilatory products that retard hair regrowth, and if you are interested, can provide them and some information about how to take care of your skin to reduce ingrown hairs, rashes, bumping and irritation. Our post-depilatory products contain ingredients like camomile, azulene, calendula, arnica, aloe, St. John's Wort or other plant based products to soothe the skin and reduce redness. These ingredients can be found in our SkinCeuticals and Dr. Renaud skin care lines as well.

The key to reducing ingrown hairs, rashes, bumps and irritation is good skin care. Typically a good skin care regimen includes cleansing, toning and hydrating. In a facial, we add great exfoliators and treatments to rehydrate and rejuvenate your skin. Post-hair removal skin primarily needs soothing. It may feel and look sensitive after waxing. Using aloe or azulene products will immediately soothe the area. Anti-inflammatory products such as calendula, arnica and St. Johns later that same day and the next will help.

The most important step both before and after waxing is exfoliation! Daily exfoliation is the key to prevention of ingrown hairs and rashes. The hair simply gets stuck under the shed dead skin cells if they are not properly removed. Bumps and inflammation occur when that ingrown hair gets infected. Sometimes people believe these ingrown hairs are actually pimples, zits or acne. Daily exfoliation allows new hairs to effectively penetrate the surface of the skin.

Prevention of ingrown hairs, bumps, rashes and irritation leading to infection can also result when you use exfoliating treatments containing alpha and beta hydroxy acids, granular scrubs and other products. The dialy use of these products removes the dead surface skin cells, exposing newer cells and allowing new and trapped hair follicles to penetrate the skin and also clear pores. The proper mix will also allow for the proper absorbtion of moisture keeping the skin properly hydrated.

Have you heard about the fish pedicure? Imagine placing your feet in a receptacle, e.g., fish tank, so that the fish eat the dead skin from your body. Very popular in the most hip of spas. It is an interesting idea, and maybe you have had that sensation before while visiting Lake Texoma or some other lake with lots of fish.

Although I have had a couple of clients inquire, we are not providing the fish pedicure at Bella Fontana Spa!Sanitation is a big thing for me, and part of our practice. I direct my employees to use EPA rated cleaning solutions that protect client and employee from bacterial, viral and fungal infections in and on all of our equipment. Also, I direct my employees to use each implement on only one customer. No double dipping!

The problem with the fish is that neither they, nor their tank can be effectively cleaned and sanitized between customers, putting us all at risk for infectious diseases. Even the State of Texas has put an advisory on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation that since the same fish are used on multiple customers and the holding tank cannot be cleaned according to the rules for pedicures that this procedure cannot be offered in cosmetology and barber establishments.
