May is National Melanoma Awareness Month
I just lost a dear, long-time friend to melanoma. A generous, sweet spirit, she shared a special agape unconditional love with everyone she met. Mother, wife and pillar of her church, she sang, she worked and ministered to us all.
As we approach the summer, please consider your skin! Protect yourself with high quality sun protection products.
Did you know the effect of ultra-violet exposure is cumulative?
Did you bask at the lake, beach or your back yard with baby oil and iodine or other sun accelerators?
Do you check your moles yourself, or at minimum at each physical?
Read this PDF File on Sun Safety from Melanoma.com.
Do not ignore those spots! My friend's cancer was found by her hairdresser, on her scalp when her hair was being washed. Spa technicians, aestheticians, hair dressers are often on the front line for spotting potential problems, and should be reminding you to have your physician look at all your spots at least each year. We touch you and look at your skin, and hopefully are on the watch for the following signs:
* Variations in color in a single mole; especially very dark brown or brown/black coloration
* Larger than the diameter of a pencil eraser
* Assymetry
* Uneven borders
* Change in shape or size over a short period of time
Protect yourself and your children against the SUN! Check out this Melanoma Website for More Information:
Moles versus Melanoma

Dorinda's melanoma reminds us that bad things can happen to good people but that vigilance can prevent some very bad things like melanoma.
I am a prostate cancer survivor because my cancer was detected early enough for a cure. But it was almost caught too late. I had to ask my doctor to test my PSA. He mistakenly thought that a 4 was "normal".. Fortunately, I changed to a new doctor a few months later. He immediately ordered a biopsy when he discovered that my PSA had gone to 5 in a few months. A few more months delay and the cancer could have spread.
I have also had several skin cancers. Regular checks are really important.
Its a matter of life and death! Spas give access to people who can help us achieve not only relaxation and beauty but also wellness. Don't neglect to take care of yourself! You and those you love deserve it.
Hi Ruth,
I am looking for a true story of someone with melanoma of the scalp to feature in an informatory pamphlet I am putting together. Would you be interested in sharing your friends story with me? Please email me at your convenience. Thank you!
